Estimating Building Emissions by Square Footage
Primary energy consumption data is preferred to measure the emissions of your buildings (i.e., kilowatt hours for electricity, therms for natural gas, etc.). But in cases where this is unavailable, Gravity also supports estimating emissions via square footage and building type.
Our primary data source is the most recent U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS). CBECS gives average annual energy consumption figures by major building type. Gravity estimates assume buildings use both electricity and natural gas, and calculate emissions from average consumption per building type.
